0 Stellar features in integrated starburst spectra as stellar population diagnostics ⋆

چکیده
We review the main stellar features observed in starburst spectra from the UV to the near-IR and their use as fundamental tools to determine the properties of stellar populations from integrated spectra. The origin and dependence of the features on stellar properties are discussed, and we summarise existing modeling techniques used for quantitative analysis. Recent results from studies based on UV, optical and nearIR observations of starbursts and active galaxies are summarised. Finally, we briefly discuss combined starburst + photoionisation models including also observations from nebular emission lines. The present review is complementary to the recent summary by Schaerer (2000) discussing more extensively nebular analysis of starbursts and related objects.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملTheoretical Mid-Infrared Modeling of Starburst Galaxies
We investigated the ability of the stellar models Starburst99 and MappingsIII to model starburst galaxies using infrared diagnostics and Spitzer data. The infrared diagnostics were useful for distinguishing between starforming galaxies and AGN. The theoretical starburst models indicate that the infrared emission-line ratios are largely degenerate and are extremely sensitive to the age of the st...
متن کاملAn Integrated Spectrophotometric Survey of Nearby Star-Forming Galaxies
We present integrated optical spectrophotometry for a sample of 417 nearby galaxies. Our observations consist of spatially integrated, S/N = 10− 100 spectroscopy between 3600 and 6900 Å at ∼ 8 Å FWHM resolution. In addition, we present nuclear (2. 5 × 2. 5) spectroscopy for 153 of these objects. Our sample targets a diverse range of galaxy types, including starbursts, peculiar galaxies, interac...
متن کاملThe Super Star Cluster Ngc 1569-a Resolved on Sub-parsec Scales with Hubble Space Telescope Spectroscopy1
We present 3000–10000 Å HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the bright super star cluster A (SSC-A) in the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The 0.05 HST angular resolution allows, for the first time, to probe for spatial variations in the stellar population of a ∼ 10M⊙ SSC. Integrated ground-based spectra of SSC-A have previously revealed young Wolf-Rayet (WR) signatures that coexist with featur...
متن کاملMagellanic Cloud Star Clusters as Simple Stellar Populations
Integrated spectra have been obtained of 31 star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds (MC) and of 4 Galactic globular clusters. The spectra cover the wavelength range λλ3500 – 4700 Å at a resolution of 3.2 Å FWHM. The MC clusters primarily cover the age range <10 – 3 Gyr, and hence are well-suited to an empirical study of aging post-starburst stellar populations. An age-dating method is presented ...
